Sassafras bark (Sassafras albidum)

Sassafras bark tea, made from the root bark or just the bark, has been drunk for over 300 years & is used to flavor medicines & candy.

A traditional use of sassafras tea is to help the immune system recover from poison oak/sumac. Sassafras tea is used to induce sweating to break a fever.

The essential oil in sassafras bark contains traces of safrole, a toxic chemical, and its use as an oil is greatly cautioned. Sassafras bark is not to be used while pregnant.

Often used in herbal mouthwash & toothpaste, Sassafras has a nice flavour & a disinfectant action. Also used in treatment of exzema & gout!
