By Herbs from the Labyrinth

Add a hand dyed silk pillowcase to your self-care practices and show some love and compassion for yourself each night.

We spend a third of our life sleeping. Sleeping on silk is certainly luxurious, but did you know that silk is protects your skin and hair from moisture loss? Silk helps you to have more restful, peaceful sleep. Silk prevents static from building up in your hair and reduces moisture loss from your skin. And, because the fiber is so fine, and the weave so tight, silk pillowcases are hypo-allergenic.

Machine wash and dry in cold water on gentle cycles.

Sarah uses plants and other natural materials to dye these silk pillowcases, and in addition to fabulous colors, the plants add subtle energetic properties of their own.

Alkanet shares a champagne color on the silk and is protective of our physical health.  The herbalist Culpepper called Alkanet “a darling of Venus” Love, beauty and health.

Cochineal gives a color range similar to Lac and is from a beetle that lives on the prickly pear cactus.  This is the traditional source of red dyes in Mexico and the rest of MesoAmerica.

Goldenrod gives a soft yellow gold.

Logwood, also known as Palo Campeche which means “wood from the place sacred to the snake goddess”, gives colors ranging from lavender to deep purple, and grows in places that are sacred to the Goddess. The Logwood I use is sustainably harvested and certified Fair Trade from the Dominican Republic.

Lac gives a deep pink/magenta color, from a resinous excrement of a small beetle in India, collected under trees during the fertile “Season of Red Rain”. Considered to be aphrodisiac.

Madder root gives colors in the orange range and has been used as a dye plant for more than 5000 years.

Mugwort gives a color that is like golden champagne and is well-known as an herb that supports vivid dreams and is useful for visionary purposes. The Mugwort I use grows at the edges of my labyrinth garden.

Osage orange wood chips give a deep golden or yellow hue. The wood chips I use are given to me by a traditional bow-maker.  I think of it as “spinning straw into gold”.

Queen Anne’s Lace gives a color like champagne.  QAL is naturalized throughout the Appalachian region, brought here by women immigrating from Scotland and Ireland, and used for birth control.  The energy of Queen Anne’s Lace is supportive of women’s personal sovereignty.

Mugwort Pillowcase – I bought this jewel of a sleep aid over a year ago. The essence of the Mugwort was useful when I wanted to encourage dreams. I used it only on those occaisons for many months. Then it got put away as I moved away from active dream work. Fast forward to now. I bought a bamboo pillow as a self-care gift only to discover none of my regular pillowcases fit. I looked at the silk one and said “Let’s try this one.” Low and behold it fit my oversized pillow perfectly! Apparently, I am to keep Dream Work a part of my daily regimen. Thanks again Sarah for such quality and richness added to my life! Sweet Dreams!! <3
