Each of our Kantha quilts is a unique and colorful piece of traditional art for your home. You might use one as a wall hanging, table covering, bedspread, or throw blanket. I keep one at the foot of each bed in my house, and use another as a table cloth in the dining room.

Many yoga studios use kantha quilts as coverings during savasana, the resting pose at the end of class.

Kantha quilts are reversible, having complementary color and pattern schemes on each side.

Kantha is a type of embroidery practiced by rural women in South Asia, especially East India. Women in Bengal typically use old saris and cloth and layer them with kantha stitching to make a light blanket, throw, or bedspread.  Old saris are stacked on each other and hand-stitched. The traditional form of Kantha embroidery was done with soft cotton dhotis and saris, with a simple running stitch along the edges. In some cases, the entire cloth is covered with running stitches. The stitching on the cloth gives it a slightly wrinkled, wavy effect.  Kantha stitching is also used to make simple quilts.

The Kantha quilts we have are made by hand by women in India, and your purchase helps to support their rural families.

Fair trade, of course.
