Goddess on Earth (the film) is a meditative video based on the archetypal stages of a woman’s life – maiden, mother and crone. Using the photographic portraits from the Goddess on Earth series of contemporary women portraying ancient sacred myths, viewers are enveloped by words, sounds and video. A virtual landscape of archetypal imagery is created that takes the viewers on a transcendent journey that encourages them to ruminate on their own life passage as well as the divine presence within us all.
Beginning with a presentation, Lisa will explore the artwork of various artists in America – herself included - who have used Goddess imagery as an affirmation of female power and independence.
As the feminist art movement arose in the early 1970s, innovative artwork was created that heighten the awareness of the female perspective. During this period, feminist artists such as Judy Chicago, Ana Mendieta, Mary Beth Edelson, and Louise Bourgeois, to name just a few, also began to reclaim the Goddess in their artworks. Their political art brought into focus both the lack of representation of women artists in the mainstream, male dominated art world, and the devaluation of the feminine in our patriarchal society.
After the initial presentation we will view Lisa's film, Goddess on Earth, together. This is a short film that celebrates the strength and self-esteem of contemporary women by photographing them in their embodiment of goddesses and sacred myths. The film has been seen in a variety of venues throughout the United States, and has featured such well-known women as Isabel Allende (author), Olympia Dukakis (actress), Nomfundo Walaza (CEO of Desmond Tutu Peace Trust), Gloria Feldt (former CEO Planned Parenthood, founder of Take the Lead) and Kathy Eldon (founder of Creative Visions).
The afternoon will culminate in an experiential workshop during which we will use Goddess imagery to invigorate our personal connection with the Divine; cultivate a deeper understanding of our selves through ancient mythology; employ archetypes as a catalyst for change; and stand in circle embodying the divine within us to bring a deeper mindfulness of our collective memory.
Cost for this afternoon workshop is $35 in advance, $40 on the day of the event.
Please feel free to bring any clothing, accessories, masks, etc, that you think you might want to use of share during the experiential portion of the workshop.
There will be a few opportunities for individual photo sessions with Lisa on the following day. Contact Radiance for more information on this opportunity.
