The original recipe for Four Thieves was herbs infused in vinegar.  This blend is believed to have been created by a group of thieves and grave robbers during the 15th century to protect themselves from contracting the plague while robbing the bodies of the gravely ill and deceased. When apprehended, the thieves admitted to using the herbs and disclosed the formula in order to receive a less severe punishment for their crimes.

Whether or not this story is true, these essential oils are antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-infectious. They will stimulate the immune, circulatory & respiratory systems, helping to protect against the flu, colds, bronchitis, pneumonia, sore throats, infection, and more. Modern testing has proven the effectiveness of this blend and studies have found it to have a high kill rate against airborne bacteria.

Many herbalists have created their own versions of the formula, and this is mine, made here at Herbs from the Labyrinth. You can order either full-strength, pure essential oils, or a bottle of the essential oil blend diluted to 10% in Apricot kernal oil for use directly on your skin.

Use the pure essential oil blend in your diffuser, humidifier, or in making your own products, including antiseptic cleaning sprays.

The diluted version is safe to use on your skin. This is a blend of apricot kernel and essential oils that can be used as massage oil for sore muscles, the lower back, neck and feet. For immune support and general cold and flu prevention, dab on skin throughout the day.  One of my favorite ways to use it is massaging it into the soles of my feet before bed when I have the first hint of a cold or sore throat – I wake up in the morning with no symptoms.

Ingredients: Essential oils of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary, ravensara, lavender, and juniper
